Walter Layton, youngest son of L. E. Layton, former Akron resident, died Tuesday night in San Diego, California. He belonged to the United States Navy and had been removed to the Navy hospital after he had contracted pneumonia.

Mrs. Paul Percy, a sister, of Richmond, California, is accompanying the body to Akron where funeral services will be held and burial made.

Walter Kenneth Layton, son of Lewis E. and Lucy Owen Layton, was born in Nunn, Weld County, Colorado, on April 4, 1918, and died July 7, of this year, in the Naval hospital, at San Diego, California, at the age of 18 years, 5 months and 3 days.

Upon the death of his mother, in 1919, when he was but a year old, he was taken by his father to Iowa, where he lived with his father, until he was 12 years old.

At the age of 12, however, he returned to Colorado to make his home with his brothers, Raymond and Earl in Parker, Colorado.

After graduating from grade school, he attended the Parker High School, from 1932 to 1933, the Akron High School from 1933 to 1934 and the Douglas County High School at Castle Rock from 1934 to 1935.

After leaving high school, he applied for entrance into the United States Navy and on April 10 of this year was accepted and appointed to service in San Diego, California, where he soon began to distinguish himself, by becoming, in six weeks, honor man of his company and by thus giving promise of achieving a successful and perhaps distinguished career in our country's service.

Unfortunately, however, he was, late last month stricken with lobar pneumonia and on the June 29 was taken to the Naval hospital, where, though every effort was made to save him, he died after a little more than a week's illness.

Though the Navy would have buried him with high honors in any Naval Cemetery that his friends and relatives might have chosen, and would have felt honored to do so, his friends preferred to perform this last loving service themselves and to have the body laid to rest in the family plot here in Akron.

His nearest surviving relatives are his father, Lewis E. Layton, his two brothers, Raymond Howard of Texas City, Texas and Earl Dale of Denver, and his sister, Mrs. Vera Lorene Percy of Richmond, California.

The funeral was held in the Methodist Church on Monday, July 13. The American Legion had charge of services at the grave.
